フォレスト・ギャンダーまたはフォレスト・ガンダー[1]（Forrest Gander、1956年1月21日 - ）は、アメリカ合衆国の詩人、エッセイスト、小説家、翻訳家、批評家。

略歴[編集]

カリフォルニア州のモハーヴェ砂漠に生まれ、ヴァージニア州で育つ。小学校教師だった母親や母方の祖父の影響で、幼少期より詩に親しむ[2]。ウィリアム・アンド・メアリー・カレッジで地質学を修めた後、サンフランシスコ州立大学で英文学の修士号を取得する。その後、メキシコやアーカンソー州等へ移り住む[3]。 アメリカ議会図書館や全米芸術基金、ジョン・サイモン・グッゲンハイム記念財団等より奨励金を受け、詩人として活躍するとともに、小説やエッセイの執筆、翻訳、アンソロジーの編集も行う。また、様々な分野のアーティストとのコラボレーションでも知られる。 ハーバード大学で教鞭を執ったのち、ブラウン大学教授となる。2018年よりカリフォルニア大学バークレー校教授。 詩人のC. D. ライトと結婚し、二人の間には息子が一人いる[4]。

著作と評価[編集]

代表的な詩集にScience & Steepleflower (1998), Torn Awake (2001), Eye Against Eye (2005)等があり、2011年出版のCore Samples from the Worldは2012年ピューリッツァー賞 詩部門[5]および2011年全米批評家協会賞のファイナリストに選ばれた[6]。ピューリッツァー賞での評は「世界における異文化間の緊張関係を検討し、人間の経験の本質を深く追求した魅力的な作品」。2018年に発表されたBe WithはWashington Post Book Worldにおいて「複雑な読書体験が強烈な美によって仕切られる（"A complex reading experience punctuated by intense beauty."）」（Ref: Be With裏表紙）と評され、全米図書賞候補及びピューリッツァー賞 詩部門受賞作となる。

ギャンダーの詩はイタリア語、中国語、ドイツ語、日本語、スペイン語、トルコ語、オランダ語等に翻訳されている。 詩人のロバート・ハースは、ギャンダー作品における風景や生態系への言及に注目しつつ、「南部の稀有な詩人で、休みなく実験を続ける作家だ」と述べている。（Ref: Hass, Robert (May 2, 1999). "Book World". ラテンアメリカの詩人の英訳詩集やアンソロジーを数多く出版し、Firefly Under the Tongue: Selected Poems of Coral Bracho (2008) はPENアメリカ翻訳賞のファイナリスト、ケント・ジョンストンと共訳したThe Night: A Poem by Jaime Saenz (2007)はPENハイム翻訳基金助成金を受賞している。チリ人ノーベル賞作家パブロ・ネルーダの翻訳者としても高く評価されている。 また、吉田恭子と共訳した野村喜和夫の英訳詩集、Spectacle & Pigsty: Selected Poems of Kiwao Nomura (2011) は2012年アメリカの最優秀翻訳作品賞（Best Translated Book Award）を受賞[7]。2016年には吉増剛造の英訳詩集Alice Iris Red Horse: Selected Poems of Gozo Yoshimasuを編訳している。

コラボレーション[編集]
