radually moved to topspeed position, when the direct drivefrom engine to running wheels is ob-tained by the engagement of the topspeed clutch which locks the planetarygearing solid, and also reduces the cur-rent generated to zero. By moving thecontroller handle to a position beyondtop speed, the battery used for start-ing the engine (but not for propellingthe car) may be recharged. The carcan be driven from either end at will. Westinghouse brake equipment isprovided; the car is lighted with electriclight and carries an electric headlightat each end. Hand brakes are fitted, aswell as air sanding apparatus. Theabove arrangement is ideal for a petrol-electric rail coach, as a direct mechan-ical drive on top speed is obtained, aswell as the flexibility of a purely elec-trical drive. The total weight of thecar is 36 tons, about 9 tons of whichcomprise the weight of the engine,transmission gear, radiators and elec-trical machines. Oncethe engine is working, the auxiliaryswitch is moved to the off positionand main controller placed in the firstspeed notch. By slowly operating 1 in 40 at 15 miles per hour, the grossload being over 50 tons. The maxi-mum speed on the flat is over 40 milesper hour.
